Approaching the windward mark. International Star Class Sailboat, Bacardi Cup 2009.
The International Star Class Racing Yacht was designed by the renowned naval architect William Gardner in 1910 and the first 22 were built by Isaac Edgar "Ike" Smith in Port Washington, Nassau County, New York, USA in 1911.
The Star has been described by some designers as the "perfect sailboat design" from an aesthetic viewpoint.
The Star was the men's keelboat Olympic Class from 1932 to 2012, with the exception of 1976 when it was replaced for one year by the Tempest Class. The men's keelboat class has been eliminated for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
I've long had an interest in these boats as Ike Smith was my Great Grand Uncle, my Great Grandfather's Brother, and my Father grew up knowing him. As a young man my Dad learned how to build and repair rowboats from his Uncle Ike.
Photographs for home, office, hospitality, restaurants and institutional decor.

Beautiful shot! My second husband and I used to sail Stars - we had 4159 which he and a friend raced in the 1969 Bacardi Cup. Lovely boats, lovely memories, lovely picture . . .
